Gift giving advice

Be careful about giving a gift related to a hobby of the recipient. My friends and family know that I like chess, so I have about 5 or so chess sets now. If the recipient is very involved in an activity, and there is an item essential for that activity, odds are that they probably already have that item. I'm pretty sure that John McEnroe already has a tennis racket.
